Design and development of Archive for Resistance Strategies

The Archive for Resistance Strategies is a central feature of Annika Lundgren’s research project Performing Resistance which aims to collect, sort and publish strategies. We were deeply involved in developing the concept for the archive itself and how it would interact with the world through two primary communication channels: a set of physical archive cards and a web site.

From our involvement in the core concept of the archive, we had a natural position to create a taxonomy and selection criteria for the strategies, working with copy editing of strategies and paratexts of the archive, and design communications for the archive. But the largest feat of our work with the archive is the conceptualization, design and development of the website which works as a distributed way to share, collect and think around the strategies of social resistance which is the archive.

The Archive for Resistance Strategies was developed as a way of communicating some of the research outcomes emanating from the Resisting Performance project while making it possible for others to contribute to the overall work. We suggested that a web app is a model that many outside of academia will find useful, friendly and relevant.

Strategies are divided in a number of categories—a move that also provided meaningful development of what the underlying taxonomy is. In this regard, the making of the web app was also a step forward for Lundgren's own thinking.

Throughout the project, the very concept of an individual strategy is connected to conceptual art and the way an idea can materialize through many media. As a way to bring the Archive closer to people, we also designed a physical installation of the Archive located at Skogen, in Göteborg.

A thorough conceptual process took place where we worked closely with Lundgren to understand how strategies would be manifold in meaning, yet be decontextualized from their origins—as strategies were developed in seminars, talks and through Lundgren's art practice but should never be too closely tied to them.

Making the Archive for Resistance Strategies useful even on mobile platforms was of course necessary because of the project's performative nature.
